The Fat Pitch: Weekly Market Summary – U.S. Housing Remains Weak Link

The Fat Pitch is authored by Urban Carmel, a storied market strategy consultant and commentator.  The objective of The Fat Pitch is to provide a structured, quantitative, and empirical methodology for evaluating the state of the market.

Specifically, the Fat Pitch on this site refers to two situations. First: A Fat Pitch comes at a market turning point. It is an identifiable and quantifiable capitulation point where sellers or buyers have become exhausted and panic or euphoria is at an extreme. Second: The Fat Pitch is a favorable investing environment. Old hands talk about there being only a few good times each year to be involved in the market. The remainder are unprofitable.

This Weekly Market Summary: Despite housing weakness, a 2019 recession seems unlikely. The bond market continues to show growth. High yields have declined. Retail sales continues to grow and the trend higher is strong. Unemployment claims have resumed declining. But housing weakness is a concerning trend. So, on balance, the indicators are not predicting an imminent recession. However, the indicators when they begin to show weakness usually portend a weakness in equity prices, which usually show their weakness before the recession occurs. We must be watchful.
