2025 Canadian Mining Hall of Fame Gala Inducts Four New Members

Congratulations to Sean Boyd, Frank Giustra, Donald MacLean, and Patricia Sheahan

Congratulations to the 2025 inductees into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame (CMHF):

  • Sean Boyd transformed Agnico Eagle (TSX: AEM | NYSE: AEM) from a single-mine operation into one of Canada’s largest and most successful mining companies, growing its market capitalization from $400 million to over $55 billion. As CFO (1990), CEO (1998–2022), and later as Executive Chair, Mr. Boyd expanded the company’s operations from Québec to Finland, Mexico, Australia, and Nunavut.
  • Frank Giustra is an entrepreneur, financier, and philanthropist who has influenced the global mining industry. He played a pivotal role in forming Wheaton River Minerals and its merger with Goldcorp, founded Endeavour Mining (TSX: EDV) and Silver Wheaton (now Wheaton Precious Metals (TSX: WPM)), and was instrumental in creating UrAsia Energy, later sold for $3.4 billion. Beyond mining, Mr. Giustra founded Lionsgate Entertainment (NYSE: LGF.A), one of the world’s largest independent film companies.
  • Donald MacLean dedicated his 60-year career to improving underground mining safety through engineering expertise and innovative entrepreneurship. Raised in Québec mining towns, he gained hands-on experience working underground and witnessed the industry’s shift to mobile equipment. In 1973, he founded MacLean Engineering, now a global leader in underground mining equipment with over 1,000 employees in six countries.
  • Patricia Sheahan is a geologist and industry leader whose nearly 60-year career profoundly impacted the mining sector. She is best known for founding Sheahan Literature Service in 1978 through Konsult International Inc., where her monthly newsletters, published from 1963 to 2022, became an essential resource for over 400 global clients, including miners, academics, and consultants.

These individuals were chosen for their remarkable careers, exceptional accomplishments, and profound contributions to the mining industry. The induction ceremony, held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre with over 800 guests in attendance, honoured and celebrated the outstanding achievements of the new inductees.

I was honoured to sit with four previous inductees to the CMHF, my father Edward G. Thompson, Dr. Norman B. Keevil, Patricia Dillon, and Robert Quartermain.
